Useful Windows XP Software

After you install Windows XP, more than likely you will have a lot more software to install. This is a list of at least some of that software.

Software

  1. Adobe Reader 7.0 - Free software to view, print, and search PDF files.
  2. AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 (Free edition for home only)
  3. AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 (Professional Single Edition Trial Version)
  4. Firefox 1.5 - The faster, better, more secure internet browser.
  5. Macromedia Flash Player and Macromedia Shockwave Player - Play Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Shockwave files.
  6. Info-ZIP - Free compressor-archiver utilities that are compatible with the DOS-based PKZIP by PKWARE, Inc. Three Info-ZIP products (UnZip, Zip, and WiZ) make a good set.
  7. iTunes 6 (with QuickTime Player 7) - iTunes is Apple Computer's digital jukebox application. Use it to organize, share, and enjoy your music. It provides access to the iTunes Music Store. QuickTime is Apple Computer's application for playing, interacting with or viewing video, audio, VR, or graphics files.
  8. Java Virtual Machine (Java Runtime Environment) - The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) enables the computer to run applications and applets that use Java technology.
  9. MailFrontier Desktop Trial - Spam blocker for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.
  10. SmartSync Pro - Backup, disaster recovery, and mirroring (bi-directional synchronization) software. Make backups to remote computers.
  11. SpyBot - Detects and removes spyware.
  12. Thunderbird - Mozilla's next-generation email client.
  13. VLC Media Player - Plays back MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 / DivX files, DVD, VCD, Audio CDs, and several types of network streams
  14. ZoneAlarm (Free version) - Personal firewall. To find the free version, click on "Download & Buy" (link on the left-hand side of the page), then click on "Trial Version" (link on the right-hand side of the page).
  15. SiteAdvisor - Uses a browser plug-in to flag sites with malicious software and invasive advertising. Look up sites from SiteAdvisor's home page.
  16. Scandoo - Flags sites with offensive content (no software to download!).
  17. GreenBorder - Uses virtualization technology to create a fence between the Internet and the users' files and personal information.

Donate Some Computer Time

  1. Folding@home - Free software used to assist the Folding@home distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases.
  2. GIMPS - Software used to participate in The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search. Mersenne Primes are prime numbers of the form 2^p - 1.
  3. SETI@home - Free software used to assist the SETI@home distributed computing project to search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This software downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.
  4. World Community Grid - Free software used to donate computer time to projects that benefit humanity.
